Newsletter - June 2024

This bank holiday weekend, on a journey from Cornwall where our daughter studies, I decided that Wells, the smallest Cathedral city, was an ideal stopover. By chance, we were fortunate that our visit coincided with the cathedral’s hosting of an installation called ‘Peace Doves’ – an illuminated artwork created by Peter Walker made up of thousands of paper doves carrying messages of peace, hope and love from local people and visitors. This artwork has toured several cathedrals but each display is unique to the setting. Visit www.wellscathedral.org

One of my favourite views of the cathedral is the well-worn staircase leading to the chapter house, an octagonal room where the clergy would have met to discuss cathedral business. Beautiful as this room is, I am pleased that our own PCC will be meeting in the comfort of the church hall on Tuesday 11th June. This will be our first chance to discuss the outcome of the vicar recruitment process, and many other items.

On 19th May, Rev. Anna Moore led our service of Pentecost. We learned about the many ways in which we may feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. Sunday school made windsocks with flame coloured tissue paper, which illustrate this idea perfectly – the spirit as an invisible breeze or powerful storm…

Big thank you to all who supported our Quiz Night on 18th May and especially to Quizmaster Roger Hillier for a fun but competitive evening – the event raised £215 for hall funds!

St Philip’s Gift Day - Sunday 7th July

There will be a celebration after the service and we hope that local parishioners as well as church members will be part of it.  Our PCC members and treasurers will share information about the Parish Giving Scheme and other ways of making donations to St Philip’s.  We hope you can join us!
